Chapter 8
Hezkale leads Phoebe through the Hiljin Towerâs labyrinthine halls, Riddy chirping happily on his shoulder, before stopping abruptly at a set of closed double doorsâthe same ones Hilmina brought her to earlier. Phoebe smiles in anticipation, a heavy-eyed Mysty stuffed underneath one arm.
âClose your eyes please,â Hezkale says.
I donât see any point in closing my eyes since Iâve already been here, but I guess Iâll do it for him.
Phoebe obliges and hears the faint creak of hinges as he shoves open the doors.
âAll right, now take about seven steps forward,â Hezkale says.
Phoebe takes a few steps. The floor texture transitions from a smooth surface to rough, sharp stone and finally to the dry dustiness of a dirt pathway.
âYou can open your eyes now.â Hezkale says.
Opening her eyes, Phoebe is transfixed by the stunning display before her. Itâs completely different from her daylight visit; only even better. With the expected swarms of streams of light, the plants she had found so astonishing earlier in the day are even more beautiful without the sun shining on them. A kaleidoscope of phosphorescence spreads through the air. From their stems to their blossoms each plant glows a distinctly different colour. Even the crystals and the other minerals in the garden are shimmering luminously and the crystal fountains make the water glitter as vividly as the plants and minerals. The streams of light seem to hover over everything, intensifying the glow of any surface they come in contact withâespecially the minerals. Gazing up at the night sky, she becomes even more bedazzled, witnessing the gorgeous displays of the multiple different stone and ringed gas moons of differing colours and sizes. She can even spot a few distant nebulas. There must be absolutely no light pollution in Yuetsionâs atmosphere! She looks down at Mysty, now wide awake, who appears to be mesmerized. The little orange tabby immediately leaps off Phoebeâs arm and wanders about, playfully waving her paws at the streams of light.
Curious, Phoebe glances down at her amethyst necklace and the ring Hezkale gave her. The gems embedded in the jewelry are glowing. Such beauty! I wonder what it is about the night time or the darkness of Yuetsion that makes the streams of light appear and make all the minerals glow, along with the plants too!
âAce!â Phoebe says.
She turns to look at Hezkale.
âBehold the outdoors of Yuetsion at night! Beautiful, isnât it?â
âHezkale, this is amazing! Iâve never seen so much light in one place before!â
Skipping out onto the grass, she twirls happily. Sheâs not surprised when the streams of light flow around with her, too. Is this what Heaven is like?
âThis is my favourite time of the day to come here,â Hezkale says.
âAre we-we alone?â
âMost likely, hardly anyone ever comes here anymore.â He pauses as if abruptly remembering something. âI guess itâs because this was Princess Vehiliaâs favourite place to come whenever her family was busy doing research in the labs. I think it brings back too many unwanted memories. But it hasnât stopped me from coming back.
